The Barn renovation at Maple Rock Farm was a very complex renovation. We wanted to keep a look that made it feel like it was built in 1799 which it was. The barn was originally built in 1799. Even though we needed to do some substantial structural repairs, it was very important that we keep the the look and feel of the original barn. We replaced 90% of the structural vertical posts and knee braces with posts we sourced from another 200 year old barn in Maine.

After repairing the structural posts, we went on to rebuilding the East wall sills and walls up to the main floor of the barn. We did this by removing small sections of wall and installing posts and studs as we went down the wall. We then were able to sheath and side the areas. There were numerous areas that needed clapboard repair as well as rake and fascia trim replaced. The cupola was completely rebuilt, and new windows added. We took out two sections of the third floor so you would be able to see the interior of the cupola from the main floor. It looks great lit up in the evening.

The west and north sides were resided using pine shiplap boards and left natural so they would eventually change to a nice gray color over time. The large door on the north end was built on site and installed. The large windows on either side were made from windows we sourced from the barn. Many of the small windows needed to have new panes of glass cut and installed.

The wall separating the event space and the storage area was added and sheathed with old barn boards sourced locally. We added two sets of sliding doors on the west end. The west end at some point had a major structural post removed and caused that corner of the barn to sag. We added a footing and new structural post and lifted that portion of the barn about 12” to make it level again.

The floor of the barn was a mixture of wood, concrete and asphalt. We brought crushed stone in to try and level off the larger dips in the asphalt and concrete sections. We then poured a concrete floor and stamped it to look like old barn floorboards. This is pictured nicely in the images above and below.

We added a post and beam bar area from material sourced from another barn in Maine.

Because the barn was going to be used as a wedding venue, we wanted it to feel very rustic. We took great care in making this barn feel like it did 215 years ago when it was built.
